When I think of wonder woman I envision a fearless, flawless, strong woman with super powers. Among those are her lasso of truth, her psychic abilities and her strength. She fights for peace, love, justice and gender equality, defeats all evil and more, while looking fabulous.
Today, in the real world we encounter a new age versions of W.W. I can think of one kind that comes to mind — it wont be a surprise when I say, Mothers. Mothers of all ages, around the world are the definition of a Super Hero.
Not only do we have most of her super powers — in a more realistic scale but we influence the way our children will look upon the world. We are their inspiration, their role models. We mums, are as fearless as she is, we give birth to life. We mums are flawless, even covered with vomit in our hair - we may not feel like it at all times but to the eyes of our little ones we are everything. We mums are the definition of strong, when our child is hurt we sure do want to cry with them but we remain calm and deal with the situation in a manner-of-facts. Our everyday fight is equal to wonder woman, we fight for peace wether it is in our home, at the playground or at school, we promote love and try to raise our kids with a mind of equality. We are the definition of Wonder Woman, we are Wonder Mums !
I always took good care of my appearance — at least after the awkward tomboy phase I went through in my teenage years. I love to have my nails done at the salon, facials, massages and getting pampered. I love wearing make up, wearing designers brands and having my hair nicely blow-dried. When you become a mother, all these “superficial” task become less and less of a priority for most.
I traded my fancy lace hosiery for organic cotton. I spend more time wearing yoga wear than anything else in my closet — even if I haven't done yoga in over four years *guilty*. I have a closet full of high heels which for most are still unworn — I am now having a second space for flats, boots sandals and sports shoes — I cannot even deal how comfortable those are !! (I always wore heels, even to the beach. I know, I know.. They were wedge, but still I get it now. Majorly Fancy Nancy !) Even if this much has changed I still care for myself in different ways.
The thing is, when you become a mum to, especially a daughter you cannot let yourself go. Little girls tend to idealise their mums. She will copy you and you want to teach good hygiene, self value and confidence. It may sound superficial so lets take a different approach. I am aware that everything begins from within but how can you be happy if you're wearing the same pyjamas everyday for a week without showering. This will more likely apply to stay at home mums because working mothers go out in a professional environment. It become easier for staying at home mothers to let go, base on the fact that we are surrounded with our kids and one amazing thing I love about children is that they don't judge - us for wearing gym gear even thought our membership has expired a year ago.
After I gave birth for most of the time I was home connecting, bonding and learning to be a mother, there was no need for me to dress up or do anything more then the basics. We took daily walks with our dogs and went to my friends shops in my village. The first time I dressed up for an event my daughter saw me wearing something more then just tights and a loose t-shirt she mustn't of been more then 3 months and the way she looked at me, I will always remember, as if she didn't recognised me. I believe that the way we care for ourselves reflect on our children. Therefor since then I do try my best to always look put together a little more then before. I am all for comfort but its nice to go the extra mile, it shows that you care.
I know motherhood can be exhausting. We should prioritize our kids but we must do certain things to make us feel good about ourselves. Take an extra 5 minutes in the shower, put on mascara, do your nails or a little lipstick there is nothing wrong with this it is in fact healthy. To be the best wonder mum you can be, you need some “me” time.
