I have been brainstorming over the past few days to settle my mind on how to remain a honest, truthful model to my daughter without robing her from her childhood.
Where do we draw this fine line of keeping magical moments while being authentic with our children ? How to keep a straightfoward organic bond while allowing our kids to be kids without dismissing the fairy dust, St-Vassilis, his reindeers and the tooth fairy ?
Before my daughter was born I use to dream of the day where I would secretly place some money in exchange for a tooth. I remember explaining to my husband about the tradition we have in our country since he was not familiar and we both agreed we would continue to carry it on with our little one.
Now, after reading “new found ways” that actually sync with me, my family and my daughter such as positive and honest parenting. I was at lost because I could not find balance in how to be genuine with my daughter while exposing her to fairy tails.
Is childhood really about fables ? Yes. Their innocence, their purity is what makes a child. Their heart be soft and kind. Through figments of our imagination they will listen to our bedtime stories myths and legends that intel principles of life such as compassion, sharing and so on..
Of couse everything is based on their personality, some children may be wittier and may ask sonner than others. Questions our stories, since in their minds things don’t add up. That is when honest parenting takes place. That is when we explain why reindeers don’t really fly or why santa is in fact not “real”. It is when our kids ask for answers we must provide them with the truth.
At the time where my daughter will be questioning my husband and I, it is crucial to feed her thirst for knowledge with facts allow her to trust us and value our words. By doing so not only we are building a solid relationship, we are also catering to her needs with respect without diminishing her intelligence.
Today, more than ever I am secretly dreaming of days where we will fill her heart with sweet romances of tails from far far away land that will marvel and enlighten her beautiful eyes. I am also looking forward to moments where she will question our stories and feel proud of her intuitions that led her to learn true meanings of life.
